What Does Hail Damage Look Like on a Roof in Georgia?

After a reported hail event, a roof may show surface marks, granule movement, dents, cracks, displaced materials, or no obvious ground-level change. Those conditions can have more than one cause. A useful inspection records what is present, where it appears, and what surrounding conditions exist without treating a photograph or mark as automatic proof of hail causation, repair scope, or insurance coverage.

The NOAA National Severe Storms Laboratory explains that hail can damage homes and other property. Its hail research page also describes how radar and reports help identify hail in storms. A weather record can support the reported event context, but it does not establish what happened to a particular roof or what an insurance policy covers.

Start With Ground-Level Safety

Do not climb onto a wet, steep, high, or possibly damaged roof to look for hail effects. Do not press, lift, probe, or remove roofing materials. Those actions can cause injury, disturb existing conditions, or create new damage.

From a safe location, a property owner can photograph visible conditions such as:

  • Loose, missing, cracked, or displaced roof-covering components
  • Marks or displacement at gutters, downspouts, edge metal, or visible vents
  • Debris or granules near drainage outlets
  • Visible changes at siding, screens, exterior trim, or other exposed surfaces
  • Interior ceiling staining or active water entry

These are reasons to arrange a qualified inspection. They are not a diagnosis. A stain does not identify the entry point, granules can move for several reasons, and a dent does not establish when or how it formed.

An inspector should also record the roof’s age when known, material type, pitch, orientation, prior repairs, maintenance condition, and areas that could not be accessed safely. These details help a reader understand the observations instead of viewing isolated close-up photographs without context.

Pattern and Timing Require Context

One close-up image rarely explains an entire roof. A useful record connects detailed photographs to overview images, roof slopes, elevations, and components. It also distinguishes observations from assumptions.

Relevant context may include:

  • Whether similar conditions appear on several slopes or only one component
  • Whether the material shows general weathering, installation issues, or prior repair
  • Whether marks appear on other exposed surfaces at the property
  • Contemporaneous photographs, maintenance records, and earlier inspection reports
  • Official weather information for the reported date and area

Official weather information can help document that hail was reported or detected in an area. It cannot establish the condition of a specific roof, the date of every mark, the proper repair, or insurance coverage.

What a Useful Roof-Condition Report Includes

A report prepared for the property owner should be reviewable by someone who was not present at the inspection. It may include:

  • Property address, inspection date, weather and access conditions, and inspector identity
  • Roof diagram or measurements identifying slopes and elevations
  • Overview and close-up photographs with consistent location labels
  • Existing roof material, visible installation details, and known age or repair history
  • Observations at coverings, transitions, flashing, drainage, accessories, and accessible interiors
  • A description of access limits and conditions that require authorized opening to evaluate
  • A construction recommendation and itemized bid when repair work is proposed

The report should not promise claim approval or state that every recorded condition came from one event. If concealed material becomes visible during authorized work, photograph and measure the condition before it is covered or discarded when doing so is safe and practical.

Observation, Construction, and Coverage Are Different Questions

An inspection observation answers what was visible at a particular time. A construction recommendation addresses what work may be needed and whether a durable repair appears feasible. An insurance decision applies the policy to the carrier’s investigation.
