If you’ve shopped for a roof in Atlanta recently, “GAF Certified” has shown up in half the contractor pitches you’ve gotten. It’s a real credential, but it also gets misrepresented and misunderstood often enough that homeowners and property managers should know what the tiers actually mean before they sign anything.

What GAF Is
GAF is North America’s largest roofing materials manufacturer — they make the shingles on roughly one in four residential roofs in the U.S., along with commercial systems (TPO, EPDM, modified bitumen). When you see “GAF” on a roof in Atlanta, it’s their products being installed, but the contractor is separately certified by GAF to install them. Buying GAF shingles and hiring a GAF-certified contractor are two different things, and the gap between them is where most warranty disputes start.
The GAF Certification Tiers
GAF has three tiers of factory-certified contractors. They’re not all the same, and the tier determines what warranty you can actually get.
1. GAF Certified Contractor (Entry Tier)
This is the baseline credential. To earn it, a contractor must:
- Carry adequate liability insurance
- Have a satisfactory rating with their state contractor licensing board
- Maintain a BBB rating (where applicable)
- Demonstrate consistent product installation

2. GAF Master Elite Contractor (Top 3% Nationally)
To earn Master Elite, a contractor must:
- Hold all the Certified-tier requirements
- Have been in business for at least seven years
- Maintain ongoing manufacturer training
- Carry higher insurance limits
- Be in good standing with all licensing bodies
GAF caps the Master Elite designation at roughly 3% of roofers nationally. It’s a real differentiator — but it’s also frequently misrepresented. Always verify directly in GAF’s contractor locator rather than taking a sales rep’s word for it.
3. GAF System Pro / Commercial Designations
For commercial roofing — TPO, EPDM, modified bitumen — GAF runs separate system-specific certifications under its Master Craftsman and System Plus commercial programs. Each roofing system (TPO fully-adhered vs. mechanically attached, for example) has its own training and qualification track, and a contractor certified on one system isn’t automatically certified on another. If you’re specifying a commercial re-roof, ask which specific system the crew is certified to install — not just whether they carry “a GAF commercial certification.”
Why This Matters for Your Warranty
The real reason GAF tiers matter is warranty tier.
GAF offers manufacturer warranties on shingle systems that range from a 10-year limited warranty up to a 50-year non-prorated transferable warranty (the Golden Pledge). The catch: the warranty tier you can get is tied to the contractor’s certification tier, not to the shingles themselves.
- A non-GAF-certified contractor can sell you GAF shingles, but you only get the basic manufacturer’s material warranty — no labor coverage, no system warranty.
- A GAF Certified contractor unlocks the System Plus warranty (limited 50-year on materials, 10-year on workmanship).
- A Master Elite contractor unlocks the Golden Pledge warranty (50-year non-prorated, 25-year workmanship, fully transferable to a future buyer).
For context, a typical architectural-shingle roof replacement in metro Atlanta runs roughly $9,000–$18,000 for an average single-family home, higher for steep pitches, multiple tear-off layers, or premium shingles — general market ranges, not a quote, and any real number needs an on-site estimate. On a job in that range, the gap between System Plus and Golden Pledge is meaningful, especially if you plan to sell inside 10–15 years — a transferable Golden Pledge warranty is a selling point; a non-transferable one is not.
Labor coverage is the part people miss. If a roof leaks in year 4 from an installation error, the material warranty doesn’t pay for tear-off and re-install labor — only the System Plus or Golden Pledge workmanship coverage does. That distinction is worth more than the shingle brand itself.
Commercial Roofs: a Different Set of Rules
Everything above is written for residential shingle roofs. Commercial low-slope systems — TPO, EPDM, PVC — run on a separate certification track, and GAF isn’t the only name that matters there. Mule-Hide, for example, runs its own certification and warranty program for commercial single-ply, independent of GAF’s residential tiers. Commercial re-roofs also price differently: TPO replacement in the Southeast generally runs $6–$11 per square foot depending on insulation condition, deck type, and drainage work — again a general market range, not a bid.

Verifying takes a minute and protects you from claims that don’t match reality. If a contractor’s name doesn’t appear at all, ask them directly for their GAF certification number and confirm it yourself — don’t take a printed certificate at face value, since certifications lapse and old paperwork doesn’t update itself.
Other Certifications Worth Caring About

Frequently Asked Questions
Does GAF certification expire? Yes. GAF reviews contractor standing periodically and requires ongoing compliance — insurance, licensing, training, installation quality. A contractor can lose Certified or Master Elite status if any of those lapse, which is why checking the locator at hiring time matters more than a certificate on an office wall.
Does hiring a GAF-certified contractor cost more than an uncertified one? Not inherently — certification doesn’t set the price, the contractor does. What it buys is access to a warranty tier an uncertified contractor can’t offer at any price. Compare quotes on the same scope and weigh warranty coverage, not just the bottom-line number.
